ConversAsians is a 4-day event that celebrates artists and their contribution to the Asian performing arts scene. From established masters to the rising stars of a younger generation, the artists featured are known for their impressive track record of innovative work and distinctive styles.

Targeted at producers, presenters, artistic directors, curators, cultural decision-makers, artists and arts students who have a keen interest in the development of the Asian arts scene, ConversAsians puts the focus on artists and their artistic journeys. Through a series of talks, discussions and workshops, participants will gain a deeper insight into the creative process of these featured artists as well as engage in meaningful dialogue about the performing arts scene today. These artists will also show their works-in-progress, performance excerpts as well as complete works.

How is ConversAsians different from a typical arts mart?

Instead of evaluating the end-product of a showcase production, participants will be invited in these few days of "artistic getaway", to delve into the essence behind an inspired piece of work and be inspired through face-to-face interaction with the artists. At the same time, artists will have the opportunity to share their views of their artistic processes.

How did the name "ConversAsians" come about?

The term "mart" suggests a buyer-and-seller relationship - where presenters/agents are on the lookout for products to purchase/sell.

Yet, what is needed in the arts industry as we embark on this new decade, is a bold impetus, to look beyond productions and get to the heart of the arts - the creators. To better understand their intent so as to competently translate the same to audiences, and to better support these creators in their artistic growth and development.

The name "ConversAsians" was chosen to reflect the personal nature of getting to know someone, and learning about each other - through having a conversation. This is the essence of engagement, in which arts practitioners can become friends, discuss pertinent topics close to their hearts, and be invigorated by heartening stories of Life's experiences that shape our art and humanity.

What we hope to achieve at the end of it?

Inspiration fuels the imagination, and in turn, creates meaningful art to inspire others.

During the four days, participants can look forward to being inspired by the stimulating conversations and leave rejuvenated, with a renewed sense of meaning and purpose of how each of us can make a difference through our respective roles in the performing arts industry.

The ConversAsians team looks forward to welcoming you to Singapore in May 2010!
