With JazzMatazz, NCPA aims at bringing traditional ‘straight - through’ Jazz music back to Mumbai, creating an annual festival that will be the most anticipated event in the cultural calendar of the city.

The festival begins with a fast-tempo bebop performance on 14 Oct 2011 with India’s legendary Jazz guru, Carlton Kitto, who’s journey has been captured in the wonderful documentary film, Finding Carlton. Commenting on performing at JazzMatazz, Carlton Kitto said “I’m thrilled to perform in Mumbai, which is the Mecca of Jazz in India.”

Jon Faddis will then take centre-stage in the second session for the day. This American jazz trumpet player, conductor, composer, and educator, about whom his friend and mentor "Dizzy" Gillespie once commented, "He’s the best ever, including me!" He says of his visit to India: “I imagine India will be inspiring to me and to my colleagues.  Some of the music that we'll perform is inspired by various friends and experiences, as well as by influences, including Dizzie Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington and many others.

Commenting on this initiative, Mr. Khushroo N. Suntook, Chairman NCPA says, “Jazz music is a much-loved genre, but Mumbai audiences are not getting enough of it! In the NCPA tradition, this is not going to be just any jazz event, but a high quality international festival featuring some all-stars of the Jazz world.”
