Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS celebrates
10th Anniversary

Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) celebrated their 10th Anniversary with a music festival in Aug-Sep 07 at one of the world’s tallest landmarks. The 10th Anniversary Festival featured a variety of artists and performances including the inaugural performance of Malaysia’s newest orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.

“In August 1998, we witnessed the birth of DFP and the MPO and the presentation of the first ever classical music season in the country. For almost 10 years, DFP has opened its door to Malaysians of all ages to experience the joy and beauty of various musical genres such as classical music, jazz, world music and traditional Malaysian art forms. At the same time, our audience had the opportunity to hear world-class artists from all over the world. With this, we hope to have met our objective in broadening and enriching the cultural experiences of Malaysians.” DFP’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms Juniwati Rahmat Hussin said in the 10th Anniversary message.

02 In conjunction with the 10th Anniversary celebration, Malaysian commissioned works involving local wayang kulit (shadow puppets) and specially-themed concerts such as ‘Symphonic Hollywood’ and ‘Latin Jazz Fiesta’, were presented. The Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) has also made its much anticipated début performance on 25 Aug 07.

Said Ms Juniwati: “This orchestra is pivotal to our educational initiatives and comprises young Malaysians between the ages of 14 - 26. Each member has been handpicked by the MPYO Principal Conductor Kevin Field, and alongside the musicians of the MPO, they have spent much of the past year rehearsing and gearing towards this occasion.”

After the successful Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra tour to China last year, this season the MPO is looking forward to its next international tour to Taiwan in Oct 07, a step to further affirm its status as an established touring orchestra in the region.
